Crowns -- referred to by some people as caps -- are dental appliances that cover the entire visible surface of a tooth. They are usually used to restore strength, shape and/or size, or the general appearance of a tooth.
There are several reasons why Dr. Wirick and his associates at Community Dental may recommend a crown for a patient. They include:
- protecting a weak tooth from breaking
- holding a cracked tooth together
- restoring an already broken tooth
- restoring a tooth that has been worn down
- covering and supporting a tooth that has had a very large cavity filled and has little actual tooth left
- securing a bridge
- covering discolored or misshaped teeth
- covering an implant
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials including metal, porcelain or ceramics, porcelain fused to metal, or resin. Each option has its pros and cons, based on factors such as position of the tooth and anticipated amount of wear and tear. The dentists at Community Dental review the choices with our patients and help them arrive at the best option for their specific situation.
Getting a crown requires two separate visits to our Community Dental offices in Raleigh.
During the first visit, we examine the tooth and prepare it for the crown. We begin by x-raying the mouth to ensure that the tooth is not decayed and in need of a root canal. Provided no root canal is needed, we numb the tooth and file it down. If a crown is needed due to missing portions of the tooth caused by decay or a chip, our dentists fill the tooth to support the crown. Once the tooth has been shaped for the crown, we take an impression of the tooth and the teeth on the opposite jaw. This ensures that the crown does not have a negative affect on the bite. A temporary crown made of stainless steel or an acrylic is placed on the tooth. Then, during the second visit, the crown is checked for proper fit and is adjusted if necessary. Once the crown is in the proper position, it is cemented into place.
Over time, it is not uncommon for crowns to become loose, or chip, or fall off. In those circumstances, or if a patient is experiencing pain or discomfort with the crown, it is important to contact us right away.
Crowns (or caps) are a very effective tool that is available for dentists to help patients' dental health and cosmetic appearance. If you believe that you or a family member would benefit from a crown, please contact Raleigh's Community Dental for an appointment, at 919-783-5677.
